COVID FIRE 3
“Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” II Cor. 7:1 (II Cor. 6:14 – 7 :1)
There is nothing that Jesus would like to have COVID FIRE burn out of us now that He has not always wanted us to be cleansed of. Its only that there is a much greater imperative today, and that only those who are thus purified will be able to stand in the Day to come.
The end of our sloppy and lukewarm religious life is approaching. The days when we could live with one foot in each kingdom. The days when we could engage in compromised faith and not appear that way because it was the accepted standard among us. We have indulged our senses much as the world has.
Take our use of time, where we have felt free to engage in absolutely meaningless frivolities hour after hour. Hours are not a renewable resource. Each one comes once and is gone. Each offers opportunities for fulfilling God’s eternal purposes or for fleshly self-indulgence. They are either “spent” or “invested” in ways that declare which of the two spirit kingdoms we find our sense of life in.
And then there’s our money and possessions, which quickly become the Master and the mammon of Mt. 6:24. Many American Christians are so intoxicated by them that they won’t even feel the heat of the approaching fire and will simply be consumed with them.
It is not only the outright sinful pursuits that we engage in that COVID FIRE would burn out of us. It is things that might seem to be innocent enough in themselves but which take the place of the better things. The things that the Spirit of Jesus would direct us to do if we would only listen to Him.
Most American Christians have little sense of the Spirit-led life, and simply respond to life’s opportunities according to personal interests and the church’s cultural norms.
“COVID FIRE, burn in my soul to cleanse me and make me whole.”
