Piper PA-16 Clipper Information and Trivia

The Piper PA-16 Clipper was the next step up from the PA-15 and PA-17 Vagabonds. The fuselage is 17" longer, and they were built under Aircraft Specification 1A1 (Rev. 13), which was approved 10/18/48. It is a four-place airplane (more or less!) with a door for rear seat passengers on the left side. It has a 115-hp Lycoming O-235-C1 engine; #1650 gross weight; full electrical system, and 30-gallons of fuel. It still has control sticks instead of wheels, and no flaps. Serial Numbers are 16-1 and up. Only 736 Clippers were built, all in 1949, and there are about 450 on the current FAA register.

The Clipper evolved into the PA-20 Pacer.

Piper PA-16 Clipper N5876H at 0AK1, Anderson Lake Airport, Wasilla, AK 5-12. It has balanced elevators, extended and squared off wings with flaps and stall fences, and those hunkin big tips like on PA-12's and others. Note also the see-through doors and the large rear window! It was built with an O-235 and the FAA register says it now has an O-290, but from that cowl I highly suspect it's an O-320.
