Piper PA-15 and PA-17 Vagabond Information and Trivia

The PA-15 Vagabond was built under Aircraft Specification A-800, and approved 7/1/48. It had a 65-hp Lycoming O-145-B2 engine; #1100 gross weight; and a 12-gal. fuel tank similar to a J-3 Cub. Construction Numbers were 15-1 and up. Dual controls were optional. They had no starter or generator, but a battery powered leading edge landing light was optional. They were built with a solid landing gear, i.e. no shock cords, but many have been converted to PA-17 style. Nearly 225 PA-15's are still on the FAA register.

The PA-17 Vagabond was built under Aircraft Specificaiton A-805, and approved 8/1/48. It had a 65-hp Continental A-65-8 or 8F (flanged crankshaft) engine, and #1150 gross weight. Construction Numbers are 17-1 and up. Dual controls were standard, leading to the "Piper Cub Vagabond Trainer" logo that you'll see below, and it had shock cords on the landing gear. There was still no electrical system except for the landing light. Nearly 125 PA-17's are still on the FAA register.

Here's a closer shot; and the whole thing with some flash on a bad photo day at the 2011 fly-in. We're invited to take a look inside to see the very basic cockpit. It was called a "Piper Cub Vagabond." Cool little wheel pants there, but I bet you'd get hollered at if you stepped on them!
